Russia has passed a law banning software that allows users to view internet sites barred in the country anonymously.
President Vladimir Putin signed the bill prohibiting virtual private networks (VPNs) and other technologies that anonymize users, according to the government's website on Sunday.

The law, which was approved by the Duma (Russian parliament) earlier this month, will come into effect on November 1.
Leonid Levin, the head of the Duma's information policy committee, said that the law signed by President Putin was meant to prevent access to "unlawful content" rather than restrict it from law-abiding citizens, according to Russian state news agency RIA.
He told RIA that the law did not "introduce any new restrictions and especially no censorship."
"My colleagues only included the restriction of access to information that is already forbidden by law or a court decision," he said earlier this month.
Human rights group accuse Russia of censorship
Various websites are banned under Russia's internet restriction and child protection rules. A Federal blacklist introduced in 2012 to block sites that contained materials advocating drug abuse, suicide and child pornography. It has since been relaxed to include material that advocates "extremist" content.

But the Russian state has been condemned for infringing on civil liberties by human rights groups and advocates, which accuse it of broadening the scope of banned material to censor criticism of the government.
"VPNs can help people freely access the Internet without their browsing being observed by their Internet provider," Jim Killock, executive director of the U.K. digital rights campaign Open Rights Group, told CNBC via email.
"People can also use them to access censored and blocked content. Laws that criminalize the use of privacy-enhancing technologies like VPNs are incredibly dangerous and will restrict rights to privacy, free expression and access to information."
China's censorship problem
Russia's VPN ban follows the news that Apple had removed most major VPN apps from its app store in China, in order to comply with a law passed earlier this year.
China clamps down on the use of VPNs
Sunday, 23 Jul 2017 | 9:52 PM ET | 01:33
"Earlier this year China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) announced that all developers offering VPNs must obtain a license from the government," the tech giant said in a statement.
"We have been required to remove some VPN apps in China that do not meet the new regulations. These apps remain available in all other markets where they do business."
In a blog post, ExpressVPN, which saw its app removed in the apparent clampdown, said: "We're disappointed in this development, as it represents the most drastic measure the Chinese government has taken to block the use of VPNs to date, and we are troubled to see Apple aiding China's censorship efforts. ExpressVPN strongly condemns these measures, which threaten free speech and civil liberties."

A first few tweaks toward a better Blogger
November 22, 2016
From New York to Jakarta, Blogger is one of the most popular ways to publish the things you’re passionate about. Still, we’ve heard that there’s more we can do to make the platform a better place to have your unique voice be heard. So we’ll be making some adjustments over time to bring you a faster, easier to use and more beautiful Blogger.
To kick things off, we’ve taken a crack at simplifying Blogger’s dashboard so that it’s easier for you to get right to the tools you need. Now, whenever you open Blogger, you’ll be taken right to your blog with the most recent post, putting you one click or tap closer to drafting something new.
We’ve also updated Blogger’s header bar, making it consistent with what you’ll find in other Google products. And as part of our commitment to building products that are accessible for all, we’ve adjusted Blogger’s colors to make things easier to see.
We’re starting small with these adjustments, but hope they help you create more amazing work. Please send any feedback our way and stay tuned for more updates to come.

More custom template flexibility
May 24, 2016
Last May, we added some expressions to our templating language to make it easier for you to customize your blog’s look and feel. These new expressions proved popular with those of you who enjoy advanced blogging tools, so we wanted to offer you even more flexibility.
Starting today, we’re introducing a new set of operators, which we’re calling lambda expressions, that allow you to apply rules to whole sets of data (think posts, comments, or labels), rather than just individual instances.
Let’s say you wanted to add a flower image to all posts with the label “Flower,” for example. With lambda expressions, simply define a variable name that each item in the set will take, and then refer to the variable name as though it were each item.
An example of adding a flower icon to posts labelled 'Flower'
There’s lots more that you can do using lambda expressions, like only showing posts in your feed with a given label or quickly calculating how many posts you have with a given number of comments. For a full list of the new lambda expressions available, check out the help forum.
Happy Blogging! 😃

Bringing HTTPS to all blogspot domain blogs
May 03, 2016
[Cross-posted from the Google Security Blog]
HTTPS is fundamental to internet security; it protects the integrity and confidentiality of data sent between websites and visitors' browsers. Last September, we began rolling out HTTPS support for blogspot domain blogs so you could try it out. Today, we’re launching another milestone: an HTTPS version for every blogspot domain blog. With this change, visitors can access any blogspot domain blog over an encrypted channel.
The HTTPS indicator in the Chrome browser
As part of this launch, we're removing the HTTPS Availability setting. Even if you did not previously turn on this setting, your blogs will have an HTTPS version enabled.
We’re also adding a new setting called HTTPS Redirect that allows you to opt-in to redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS. While all blogspot blogs will have an HTTPS version enabled, if you turn on this new setting, all visitors will be redirected to the HTTPS version of your blog at https://.blogspot.com even if they go to http://.blogspot.com. If you choose to turn off this setting, visitors will have two options for viewing your blog: the unencrypted version at http://.blogspot.com or the encrypted version at https://.blogspot.com.
The new HTTPS Redirect setting in the Blogger dashboard
Please be aware that mixed content may cause some of your blog's functionality not to work in the HTTPS version. Mixed content is often caused by incompatible templates, gadgets, or post content. While we're proactively fixing most of these errors, some of them can only be fixed by you, the blog authors. To help spot and fix these errors, we recently released a mixed content warning tool that alerts you to possible mixed content issues in your posts, and gives you the option to fix them automatically before saving.
Existing links and bookmarks to your blogs are not affected by this launch, and will continue to work. Please note that blogs on custom domains will not yet have HTTPS support.
This update expands Google's HTTPS Everywhere mission to all blogspot domain blogs. We appreciate your feedback and will use it to make future improvements.

An update to the Blogger post editor to help with mixed content
April 19, 2016
Back in September, we announced that HTTPS support was coming to blogspot.com, making it possible for you to encrypt connections to your blog; since then, many of you have enabled HTTPS for your blogs. In some cases, not all of your blog’s functionality has worked over HTTPS due to mixed content errors often stemming from your template, gadgets, or blog post content.
To help spot and fix some of these errors, we're releasing a mixed content warning tool that alerts you to possible mixed content issues in your posts, and gives you the option to fix them automatically before saving.
To use the tool, turn on HTTPS for your blog, open the Blogger editor HTML view, and click Save or Publish. If the editor detects any errors they will be shown above the editor, along with the option to fix the errors found.

Best practices for reviewing products you've received for free
March 11, 2016
Editor's note: This post was cross posted from the Google Webmaster Central Blog.
As a form of online marketing, some companies today will send bloggers free products to review or give away in return for a mention in a blogpost. Whether you’re the company supplying the product or the blogger writing the post, below are a few best practices to ensure that this content is both useful to users and compliant with Google Webmaster Guidelines.
Use the nofollow tag where appropriate
Links that pass PageRank in exchange for goods or services are against Google guidelines on link schemes. Companies sometimes urge bloggers to link back to:
the company’s site
the company’s social media accounts
an online merchant’s page that sells the product
a review service’s page featuring reviews of the product
the company’s mobile app on an app store
Bloggers should use the nofollow tag on all such links because these links didn’t come about organically (i.e., the links wouldn’t exist if the company hadn’t offered to provide a free good or service in exchange for a link). Companies, or the marketing firms they’re working with, can do their part by reminding bloggers to use nofollow on these links.
Disclose the relationship
Users want to know when they’re viewing sponsored content. Also, there are laws in some countries that make disclosure of sponsorship mandatory. A disclosure can appear anywhere in the post; however, the most useful placement is at the top in case users don’t read the entire post.
Create compelling, unique content
The most successful blogs offer their visitors a compelling reason to come back. If you're a blogger you might try to become the go-to source of information in your topic area, cover a useful niche that few others are looking at, or provide exclusive content that only you can create due to your unique expertise or resources.

An update on Google Friend Connect
December 21, 2015
In 2011, we announced the retirement of Google Friend Connect for all non-Blogger sites. We made an exception for Blogger to give readers an easy way to follow blogs using a variety of accounts. Yet over time, we’ve seen that most people sign into Friend Connect with a Google Account. So, in an effort to streamline, in the next few weeks we’ll be making some changes that will eventually require readers to have a Google Account to sign into Friend Connect and follow blogs.
As part of this plan, starting the week of January 11, we’ll remove the ability for people with Twitter, Yahoo, Orkut or other OpenId providers to sign in to Google Friend Connect and follow blogs. At the same time, we’ll remove non-Google Account profiles so you may see a decrease in your blog follower count.
We encourage you to tell affected readers (perhaps via a blog post), that if they use a non-Google Account to follow your blog, they need to sign up for a Google Account, and re-follow your blog. With a Google Account, they’ll get blogs added to their Reading List, making it easier for them to see the latest posts and activity of the blogs they follow.
We know how important followers are to all bloggers, but we believe this change will improve the experience for both you and your readers.

Highlight the posts that matter the most
December 10, 2015
As bloggers, we all know how important it is to post frequently in order to encourage readers to come back. Of course, the more you post, the more quickly your posts slip down into the archives, making it harder for your readers to discover everything you’ve posted that they might be interested in.
To help make it easier to showcase the posts you want your readers to see, we’ve created a new gadget called Featured Post. With Featured Post, you can choose posts you’ve shared on your blog and highlight them wherever you’d like.
Whether you’d like to re-share that delicious holiday recipe from a few years back, spotlight a can’t-miss promotion you’re running, or just revive something quirky from the archives, the Featured Post gadget is a simple way to show off the content that matters most.
To try it, just head to your Layout tab, add a gadget, and select ‘Featured Post’. You’ll be able to place the gadget wherever you’d like on your blog and then choose the post you’d like to show. If you’d like to highlight something new, you can change the post you feature at any time.
Happy blogging!

HTTPS support coming to Blogspot
September 30, 2015
This morning we posted an update about Blogspot to Google’s Security Blog https://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com/2015/09/https-support-coming-to-blogspot.html.
Since 2008, we've worked to encrypt the connections between our users and Google servers. Over the years we've announced that Search, Gmail, Drive, and many other products have encrypted connections by default, and most recently, we've made a similar announcement for our ads products.
In this same vein, today we're expanding on the HTTPS Everywhere mission and beginning an initial rollout of HTTPS support for Blogspot. HTTPS is a cornerstone of internet security as it provides several important benefits: it makes it harder for bad actors to steal information or track the activities of blog authors and visitors, it helps check that visitors open the correct website and aren’t being redirected to a malicious location, and it helps detect if a bad actor tries to change any data sent from Blogger to a blog visitor.
While this initial rollout won’t support all of our Blogger users, we wanted to take the first step to make HTTPS available for Blogspot; for those users who want to try it early.
We’re rolling this out gradually and Blogspot authors interested in enabling HTTPS support can begin opting-in today. Simply log into https://www.blogger.com, click on the blog you’d like to make HTTPS enabled, navigate to the Settings page, and select "yes" for "HTTPS Availability". Unfortunately, blogs with custom domains are not supported in this first version.
Once enabled, your blog will become accessible over both HTTP and HTTPS connections. Blogspot authors should be aware that if they choose to encrypt at this time, some of the current functionality of their blog may not work over HTTPS. This can be a result of template, gadgets, and blog post content, and is often caused by
mixed content
errors, some of which may be fixable by the author themselves.
We’ll also be moving some of our own blogs over to HTTPS gradually, beginning with the Official Google Blog and the Google Online Security Blog.
For the Blogspot authors who try this out - we’re interested to hear your feedback while we continue to improve this feature and its capabilities! For more information, visit our Help Center.

JULY 21, 2017 RUSSIA International Delegation of Brothers Shows Support for Russian Fellow Worshippers at Supreme Court Appeal Hearing
NEW YORK—The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses arranged for a delegation of brothers from three continents to travel to Moscow to demonstrate the global support for the brothers and sisters in Russia.
When the delegation arrived, they were met by the happy faces of their Russian brothers and sisters, some of whom traveled to Moscow from as far away as Siberia. The delegates assured the Russian brothers and sisters of their intense concern for them and the heartfelt prayers of the worldwide brotherhood. One member of the delegation stated: “I was truly moved by the courageous attitude of my Russian brothers, especially as there was very little expectation of a reversal of the unjust decision to ban their activity.”
Despite the negative decision by the three-judge panel, an atmosphere of genuine love and unity pervaded the courtroom. There was deep sadness at hearing Jehovah’s name reproached in such a public setting and a sober awareness that a time of testing lies ahead for the Witnesses in Russia. Yet, the dignity and affection displayed by the brothers and sisters in the courtroom was sufficient evidence to refute the erroneous charge of “extremism” upheld by the appeal judges.
Mark Sanderson, a member of the Governing Body, led the delegation. He warmly encouraged the brothers to “be strong and courageous” in the days ahead. As the visiting brothers left the courtroom, the local Witnesses embraced them and expressed appreciation for their support on this historic occasion.
The delegation also visited 21 embassies in Moscow to provide accurate information about the negative effects of Russia’s attack on Jehovah’s Witnesses. These include cases of arson on homes of Witnesses, jobs lost, harassment of children at schools, and criminal charges for organizing Christian meetings against several elders, including Brother Dennis Christensen, who remains in pre-trial detention. A number of ambassadors were visibly moved by a two-minute video that summarized these events. The most common question asked by officials was, ‘Why Jehovah’s Witnesses?’ In answer, our brothers gave a powerful witness by explaining that members of our organization are politically neutral and our preaching activity has positively changed the lives of many Russians. One ambassador responded: “The Orthodox Church does not like you fishing in their waters.” More than ten embassies sent representatives to the court hearing and stayed for the entire 8-hour duration.
The international delegation of brothers left Russia with their faith strengthened, heartened by their Russian brothers’ determination to remain loyal and the opportunity to give an effective witness to officials.

Hong Kong:
The Dragon That Never Sleeps
A long-standing, rich and historic reputation for business is Hong Kong’s ultimate asset. Mixing a tradition of trade with an energetic populace driven by the promise of opportunity, the city thrives on commerce and regeneration. That’s why the biggest names in global finance and industry pepper the cityscape.
First For Business
For the past 23 years, The Heritage Foundation, a Washington think tank, has ranked Hong Kong first in the world for economic freedom. Hong Kong is also ranked number one in the IMD World Competitiveness Center’s index. Professor Arturo Bris, Director of the IMD Center, says, “a consistent commitment to a favourable business environment was central to China Hong Kong’s rise”. The IMD report goes on to cite innovation through low and simple taxation, and picks up on the lack of restrictions on capital flows in and out of the city.
Where money flows freely and competition thrives, the city attracts global companies looking to float.
This year, PricewaterhouseCoopers expects Hong Kong to rank as the number one choice globally for taking companies to market.
It estimates that 130 companies will raise up to HK$220 billion (US$28 billion) on the Hong Kong stock market in 2017, up 13 per cent from 2016.
Gateway To China
Direct access to China’s one billion-plus consumers and billions in investment offers a robust platform to Hong Kong. The numbers show that in the past 20 years, even with the challenges that most economies face, the “one country, two systems” model has allowed Hong Kong to flourish.
Since 2003, the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) has helped expand Hong Kong’s services market, and allowed tariff-free entry for Hong Kong manufacturers, into the China market. Recent initiatives to establish bond market access between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China, and connect the Hong Kong stock exchange to those of Shenzhen and Shanghai, along with the ongoing development of the offshore Renminbi business have consolidated Hong Kong’s position as China’s global financial centre.
Apart from traditional strengths in finance, business services, transport and logistics and tourism, Hong Kong has in recent years witnessed a boom in innovation and technological advancement.
Where Opportunity Meets Possibility
At the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a research team is hoping to create clean fuel with water after discovering that exposing H2O to red phosphorus produces hydrogen bubbles. Professor Jimmy Yu, who runs the project, and holds several patents, was named by Thomson Reuters as one of the “World's Most Influential Scientific Minds” in 2014. Could he and his team develop a reliable answer to fossil fuels?
Of course, funding research and development, solving the world's problems, requires significant investment. Six universities are given annual funding of up to $4 million (US$513,000) each by the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Innovation and Technology Fund to spend on startups.
Elsewhere, renowned drone maker DJI, based in Shenzhen, salutes Hong Kong’s investment in people and facilities. Founder Frank Wang Tao started out as a Mainland Chinese graduate of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His firm is now a globally recognised success story and has since launched DJI’s near 2,000 square-meter lab at Hong Kong Science Park in 2015.
A Bustling Startup Culture
Hong Kong startups are not just home grown and the city is attracting a huge number of entrepreneurs from overseas thanks to supportive government initiatives.
“If you don’t set up your own company in Hong Kong, you don’t do it anywhere else in the world,” says Karena Belin, the founder of WHub, a startup ecosystem. “Hong Kong has a great infrastructure for doing business. It leverages a long history in international trade and has developed into one of the most important logistic centres and finance hubs in the world.”
Hong Kong has found its place on the global startup map thanks to an impressive growth, becoming one of the 5 fastest growing ecosystems in the world.

An Entrepreneur’s Paradise
Dragon Law, which offers customised legal documents to law firms via bespoke cloud software, was founded in Hong Kong and now has offices in Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. CEO Daniel Walker praises the support that helped get the company going. “We are graduates of the Cyberport incubation scheme, which gave us access to great (and affordable) office space and subsidies for various expenses as we grew... there is a great community of technology business, and many of our neighbours are clients as well as friends,” said Daniel.
Starting up in Hong Kong is easy, and increasingly high net-worth individuals are willing to provide angel investment but ecosystems take time and energy to build. Jayne Chan knows that well. As head of “StartmeupHK”, part of InvestHK, the government agency for foreign direct investment (FDI), it is her job to support foreign startups and also introduce the idea of entrepreneurship to future generations. “We are regularly in discussions with the universities and to some extent even with schools to talk about entrepreneurship,” says Jayne. “We try and get them to develop courses to be more relevant to today’s startups rather than the larger conglomerates.”
Open For Business
For more than 20 years, Hong Kong has remained the freest economy on earth. Often described as a cultural melting pot, the city continues to be one of the easiest places in the world to turn ideas into rich rewards. A mix of geography, historical experience and local enthusiasm support those foundations. Building on the commitment to togetherness, opportunity and progress, in the world of finance and business, Hong Kong is certain to remain a place where ambition and drive can thrive.

At five-foot-six and 270 pounds, the bank robber was impossible to miss. On April 19, 1995, he hit two Pittsburgh banks in broad daylight. Security cameras picked up good images of his face — he wore no mask — and showed him holding a gun to the teller. Police made sure the footage was broadcast on the local eleven o’clock news. A tip came in within minutes, and just after midnight, the police were knocking on the suspect’s door in McKeesport. Identified as McArthur Wheeler, he was incredulous. “But I wore the juice,” he said.
Wheeler told police he rubbed lemon juice on his face to make it invisible to security cameras. Detectives concluded he was not delusional, not on drugs — just incredibly mistaken.
Wheeler knew that lemon juice is used as an invisible ink. Logically, then, lemon juice would make his face invisible to cameras. He tested this out before the heists, putting juice on his face and snapping a selfie with a Polaroid camera. There was no face in the photo! (Police never figured that out. Most likely Wheeler was no more competent as a photographer than he was as a bank robber.) Wheeler reported one problem with his scheme: The lemon juice stung his eyes so badly that he could barely see.
Wheeler went to jail and into the annals of the world’s dumbest criminals. It was such a feature, in the 1996 World Almanac, that brought Wheeler’s story to the attention of David Dunning, a Cornell psychology professor. He saw in this tale of dim-witted woe something universal. Those most lacking in knowledge and skills are least able to appreciate that lack. This observation would eventually become known as the Dunning-Kruger effect.
Dunning and a graduate student, Justin Kruger, embarked on series of experiments testing this premise. They quizzed undergraduate psychology students on grammar, logic, and jokes, then asked the students to estimate their scores and also estimate how well they did relative to others (on a percentile basis). The students who scored lowest had greatly exaggerated notions of how well they did. Dunning had expected that, but not the magnitude of the effect. His first reaction to the results was “Wow.” Those who scored near the bottom estimated that their skills were superior to two-thirds of the other students.
Later research went far beyond the university. For one experiment, Dunning and Kruger recruited gun hobbyists at a trapshooting and skeet-shooting competition. Volunteers took a ten-question gun safety and knowledge quiz adapted from one published by the National Rifle Association. Again, the gun owners who knew the least about firearm safety wildly overestimated their knowledge.
Like most rules, this one has exceptions. “One need not look far,” Dunning and Kruger wrote, “to find individuals with an impressive understanding of the strategies and techniques of basketball, for instance, yet who could not ‘dunk’ to save their lives. (These people are called coaches.)” But of course coaches understand their own physical limitations. Similarly, “most people have no trouble identifying their inability to translate Slovenian proverbs, reconstruct a V-8 engine, or diagnose acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.”
The Dunning-Kruger effect requires a minimal degree of knowledge and experience in the area about which you are ignorant (and ignorant of your ignorance). Drivers, as a group, are subject to the effect — bad drivers usually think they’re good drivers — but those who have never learned how to drive are exempt.
Since Dunning and Kruger first published their results in the 1999 paper “Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One’s Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments,” the effect named for them has become a meme. It strikes a universal chord: As Dunning put it, the overconfident airhead “is someone we’ve all met.” Actor John Cleese concisely explains the Dunning-Kruger effect in a much-shared YouTube video: “If you’re very, very stupid, how can you possibly realize that you’re very, very stupid? You’d have to be relatively intelligent to realize how stupid you are … And this explains not just Hollywood but almost the entirety of Fox News.” But the 1999 paper makes clear the authors’ opinion that the first place to look for a Dunning-Kruger ignoramus is in the mirror.

There is now an active field of research into how the internet is changing what we learn and remember. In a 2011 experiment helmed by Daniel Wegner of Harvard, volunteers were presented with a list of 40 trivia facts — short, pithy statements such as “An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.” Each person was instructed to type all 40 statements into a computer. Half the volunteers were told to remember the facts. The other half weren’t. Also, half were informed that their work would be stored on the computer. The other half were told that it would be erased immediately after the task’s completion.
The volunteers were later given a quiz on the facts they’d typed. Those instructed to remember the information scored no better than those who hadn’t been told to do so. But those who believed that their work would be erased scored much better compared to those who believed it would be saved. This was true whether they were trying to remember the facts or not.

How to Say ‘Um’ and ‘Like’ and Also Sound Smart
The conscious mind exercises little choice in remembering and forgetting. Nobody decides to forget a client’s name or to remember forever the lyrics of a detested pop tune. It just happens.
The Harvard experiment’s results are consistent with a pragmatic system of memory. It is impossible to remember everything. The brain must constantly be doing triage on memories, without conscious intervention. And apparently it recognizes that there is less need to stock our minds with information that can be readily retrieved. (It may be a very long time before you need to know how big an ostrich’s eyeball is.) So facts are more often forgotten when people believe the facts will be archived. This phenomenon has earned a name — the Google effect — describing the automatic forgetting of information that can be found online.
If you take the Google effect to the point of absurdity, selfies would cause amnesia. But a 2013 study conducted by Linda Henkel of Fairfield University pointed in that direction. Henkel noticed that visitors to art museums are obsessed with taking cell-phone shots of artworks and often are less interested in looking at the art itself. So she performed an experiment at Fairfield University’s Bellarmine Museum of Art. Undergraduates took a docent tour in which they were directed to view specific artworks. Some were instructed to photograph the art, and others were simply told to take note of it. The next day both groups were quizzed on their knowledge of the artworks. The visitors who snapped pictures were less able to identify works and to recall visual details.
Our unconscious curators of memory must be aware of how quickly and easily any needed fact can be called up. This implies that our broadband networks have created a new regime of learning and memory, one in which facts are less likely to be retained and are more quickly forgotten. In a few years, we’ll probably all be wearing devices that shoot a 24-7 video stream of our lives. Will social media make amnesiacs of us all?
Uploaded keystrokes are just one of many ways we have of storing information outside our brains. Long before our virtual social networks, we shared memory, knowledge, and expertise among our real social networks. I’m not a foodie, but I have friends who can recommend interesting new restaurants. I don’t know doctors, but I have a general practitioner who can recommend a specialist. We get by in the world, not by knowing everything but by knowing people.
Distributed memory can counteract misinformation — to a degree, anyway. Surveys have shown that most people think antibiotics will fight viruses. Wrong. But as Dan M. Kahan of Yale points out, it hardly matters. “Most people” are not going to self-prescribe azithromycin. The important thing is to know that it’s a good idea to go to a doctor when we’re sick and to follow that doctor’s instructions.
The Google effect is another adaptation to distributed memory. The cloud is a friend who happens to know everything. It’s always available, provides the answer in seconds, and never gets upset with dumb questions. It’s little wonder we depend on it to the point of absurdity. Economist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz noted that the third-most-common Google search containing the phrase “my penis” is “How big is my penis?” You’d think a ruler would have a better answer.

Most — more than 50 percent — of millennials can’t name anyone who shot a U.S. president or discovered a planet; they don’t know the ancient city celebrated for its hanging gardens, the one destroyed by Mount Vesuvius, or the emperor said to have fiddled while Rome burned; and most millennials can’t name the single word uttered by the raven in Edgar Allan Poe’s poem.
The conventional reaction to such reports is a blend of shock and amusement. It’s terrible how little young people/ordinary citizens know — right? It’s worth asking how we know it’s so terrible and whether it’s terrible at all.
Ignorance can be rational. Economist Anthony Downs made that claim in the 1950s. He meant that there are many situations in which the effort needed to acquire knowledge outweighs the advantage of having it. Maybe you got your diploma and a high-paying job without ever learning about that poem with the raven in it. Why learn it now?
The contemporary world regards knowledge with ambivalence. We admire learning and retain the view that it is a desirable end in itself. But our more entitled side sees learning as a means to an end — to social advancement, wealth, power, something. We are suspicious of education that lacks an ulterior motive; we click on listicles entitled “8 College Degrees With the Worst Return on Investment.”
Ours is the golden age of rational — and rationalized — ignorance. Information is being produced, devalued, and made obsolete at a prodigious rate. Every day the culture changes beneath our feet. It is harder than ever to keep up or even to be sure that keeping up matters anymore. We are left speculating about how important it is to stay current on the Middle East, contemporary novels, local politics, wearable technology, and college basketball. A friend recently wondered aloud whether it was okay to not know anything about Game of Thrones. The observation that you can look up any needed bit of information dodges the issue. You can’t Google a point of view.
The poorly informed don’t necessarily know less. They just know different things. A gamer who spends all his free time playing video games will have an encyclopedic understanding of those games. He is ill-informed only by arbitrary standards of what’s important. Not everyone agrees that there is a fixed set of facts that all should know. But absent such a set, the concept of being well-informed becomes a hopelessly relative one.
Today’s mediascape does not provide much guidance. It encourages us to create personal, solipsistic filters over information, making it unprecedentedly easy to gorge on news of favorite celebrities, TV shows, teams, political ideologies, and tech toys. This leaves less time and attention for everything else. The great risk isn’t that the internet is making us less informed or even misinformed. It’s that it may be making us meta-ignorant — less cognizant of what we don’t know.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY BLOGGING
Updated February 17, 2017
If you’ve ever wondered how to make money blogging, you’ve come to the right place. As a 13-year veteran blogger making six figures a year, I’ll explain how bloggers make money.
By choice, I work part time and I don’t have a team (well, unless you count my teenage daughter who does a few data entry-type tasks on the weekends). In other words, you don’t have to be a big blogger who built an impressive company to make money blogging.
How to make money blogging
This post contains affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, if you click through an affiliate link and make a purchase, I may make a small commission.
Basic steps to make money blogging
Necessary steps to make money blogging
Whether you are a beginner or have been blogging a while, here are the basic steps for making money with a blog:
Start a blog
Create useful content
Build relationships with others on social media and around the web
Establish a strong platform
Choose your income streams
Now let’s cover each of those steps in more depth.
1. Start a blog
Clearly, if you want to make money blogging, you must have a blog. If you don’t already have one, no worries. Here are easy instructions explaining how to get your blog up and running.
Can I start a blog for free and make money?
This is a common question and the answer is yes. However, I would caution you against it. The reason is, when you use a free service, you don’t have full control over your blog—the free service you are using does. This can be risky, especially if you will rely on your blog for income. A self-hosted WordPress blog is my recommendation and can be started for as little as $5-$10 a month.
Related: How to Start a Blog (includes step-by-step instructions for setting up a self-hosted WordPress blog)
2. Create useful content
Once you have a blog, write useful content. Draw from your expertise & experience. Write informative posts and articles about your chosen topic. Make your content excellent.
What should I blog about?
If you’re stumped, here are ideas for posts readers will respond to:
Solve a problem
Relieve a fear
Teach something new
Explain how to reach a goal
Entertain
In order to make money, you must have blog visitors. But in order to have blog visitors, you must have content worthy of a visit.

3. Build relationships with others on social media and around the web
At the same time you are creating valuable content, start building genuine and sincere relationships with others on social media and around the web.
Which social media sites should I use?
With so many social media sites, it’s hard to know where to start.
As I explain in this post, my advice is to think about where your target audience hangs out on social media and start there.
Is your blog for moms of preschoolers? Facebook and Pinterest might be best. Is your blog for business executives? LinkedIn and Twitter are probably safe bets.
Other than being active on social media, here are more ideas: participate in Facebook Groups, comment on other blogs or join forums. Find or start a mastermind group. Reach out to people in your niche by tweeting them.
Find people who could use the information you provide. Get to know them, interact, be friendly and helpful by offering no-strings-attached tidbits of your expertise. Word about you spreads best through people who know, like & trust you.

4. Establish a strong platform
Keep growing in the knowledge of your craft so the content you produce gets increasingly deep and valuable. Use your blog to get exposure, build authority, gain trust and be helpful.
In addition, use this time to think about the type of reputation you want to build. How do you want others to see you? How do you want them to experience your site? What do you want to be known for? This is all part of your branding.

5. Choose your income streams
Once you’ve started your blog, created some excellent content, built some relationships and given thought to your branding and reputation, start thinking about ways to generate blogging income.
There are many ways you can do this. In the rest of the post, I will outline 5 main types of income along with many specific ideas for each.

Things you should know about making money blogging
Much of the money bloggers make doesn’t come from blogging directly. A blog is a platform or online home base. After proving their trustworthiness, bloggers use their blogs as springboards to launch other products & services that bring in income. Examples are ebooks, books, speaking gigs, products, ecourses, etc.
If you want to make money blogging, it takes time, creativity and hustle—a lot of all three—but it’s absolutely doable.
Each blogger has a different combination of income streams. There is no “right” way and that’s the beauty of it. There are endless possibilities. Find a combination that works for you or make up your own.
Income streams ebb and flow, so successful bloggers are constantly exploring new ways to make money. The key to making good money as a blogger is to have multiple streams of income. Even small trickles of money coming from various sources over time can add up.
The best way to start monetizing is to let it happen organically. Hopefully you are blogging about something you enjoy. As you grow, monetize (make money) in ways that would most suit you and your audience. For example, blogging about knitting? Sell knitting patterns. Blogging about fly fishing? Sell your services as a fly fishing guide. Blogging about being a preschool teacher? Sell preschool curriculum.

Streams of income used by bloggers
Following is a list of income streams bloggers adopt, broken down into five main categories:
Advertising
Affiliate Marketing
Digital Products
Physical Products
Services
How to make money blogging: advertising
Unlike many of the other categories, advertising is all about generating income directly from your blog, website or other digital asset(s).
Display Ads
Display ads are graphics or images similar to billboards or ads in a magazine. Typically they are positioned on your site in the sidebar, header, footer or within your content. Sometimes they are referred to as banner ads.
Ads on your site are meant to complement your blog’s content, making them attractive and relevant to visitors. Advertisers hope that your visitors will then click on those images to explore and purchase the products or services they offer.
Display ads are often provided through ad networks. Ad networks are companies that connect advertisers with publishers (bloggers). Ad networks act as a middle man between advertisers and publishers, negotiating partnership details between the two. The ad network takes a cut from the partnership profit. Ad networks are attractive to many bloggers because they take the hassle out of display advertising.
Some ad networks, like Google AdSense, are relatively easy to get into and are easy to set up. Other ad networks though, are selective in who they accept. Examples of ad networks are Google AdSense, Blogads, BlogHer, Beacon Ads, Federated Media, Sovrn, (formerly Lijit), Media.net, Rivit and Sway. There are many more, so once you get involved in your niche’s community of bloggers, you’ll soon hear of others.
Can you really make money with Google AdSense?
This is a very popular question, and a good one. Google AdSense is probably the most popular ad network. No doubt you have seen Google AdSense ads as you have surfed the web.
Adsense ads come in various shapes and forms. Sometimes they are images and sometimes they are text. They show up in sidebars, headers, footers, within posts and anywhere else website owners choose to display them.
Adsense is a good place for beginning bloggers to start if they want to pursue display ads because it’s so easy to set up.
However, if you want to make really good money with Google AdSense, you either have to be in a unique niche in which advertisers will pay a lot of money for clicks on their ads (hard to find), or you have to have a lot of traffic (hard to get, especially for beginners).
For these reasons, I don’t recommend AdSense (or display advertising in general) as the main pursuit for new bloggers.
Tips:
To apply for Google AdSense or other ad networks, contact the ad network via their website (choose one from above).
If you want to get an idea of pricing and traffic for popular blogs, sites like Beacon Ads and Federated Media are places you can do that.
If you’re using CPC/PPC ads (cost per click/pay per click), check out Google’s recommendations for best ad placement on your site. It’s important that your content doesn’t get drowned out by ads. Google has indicated sites with too many ads above the fold may be penalized in search. If you’re not sure what above the fold is on your site, use this tool.
As always, experiment. Experiment with ad placement to get the right combination on your site.
Further reading: Jason from ProBlogSchool explains ad networks in great detail in his post Ads 102: How to Make Money Using Ad Networks.
Private Ads
Private ads are similar to display ads in that they also come in the form of buttons or graphics and usually appear in the sidebars of blogs. They are unique in that there is no middle man (ad network) to negotiate the partnership. Partnerships are arranged directly between a blogger and an individual, small business or company.
Initial contact can be made by the blogger or by the advertiser. Be clear on what’s expected by both parties. Not sure what to charge? Look around to see what others in your niche charge. You can often find this information on a blog’s advertising page or media kit.
Don’t just throw up an advertising page and expect advertisers to come calling. Go to them. Not sure how to do that? Find other blogs like yours that are your size or slightly larger. See who is advertising on their site. Contact those companies and ask if they’d like to advertise on your site too. Create a pitch and make it a win-win. Check out iHeartOrganizing‘s advertising page as an example.
Tip for private ads on your blog: If you have ads in your sidebar, keep them full. Instead of displaying a blank box with “Advertise here” fill it with an affiliate graphic (see Affiliate Marketing below for more). Crystal Paine puts it well when she says, “[Blank ad spots] scream, ‘My advertising space isn’t valuable enough for people to want to buy so I instead have this big blank box!'”
Giveaways & Reviews
If you’ve read blogs for any length of time, you’ve surely seen a review or giveaway and maybe participated yourself. A company supplies a product to a blogger to be reviewed and/or given away to readers.
A word about giveaways…
I list giveaways here because some bloggers charge to run giveaways in addition to the expected free product to keep for themselves. There are varying opinions about whether or not one should be compensated for giveaways.
As I see it, it largely depends on whether the product is for marketing purposes or for advertising purposes. Companies use marketing to spread the word about their product or service.
With advertising, a company makes a deal with another party to help them spread the word. Companies expect to pay for advertising. For example, a company may market their product by handing out free t-shirts. Because you like the t-shirt, you take it and wear it. You obviously wouldn’t charge the company when you wore their t-shirt.
But I think a giveaway on a blog would often fall in the category of advertising. Yes, the company you’re working with may give you a product to use (indeed, they should!). However, they are also asking you to provide a service to them. After all, you are spending your valuable time fielding their emails, writing a post (or posts), following up with giveaway entrants, etc.
If there is nothing else you’re getting from the partnership except for the free product, this service should be compensated in my opinion.

Tips for reviews & giveaways:
Products you receive for free need to be reported as income on your taxes so keep excellent records and make sure the products you are accepting for review are really ones you want to pay taxes on later.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate. This is your blog. No need to just take what you’re offered on the first round. Make it a win-win for both.
If you don’t want to do a review for a company, ask the company if they’d like to buy ad space instead. Mention that they’ll still get a spot in front of your readers.
Newsletter/Podcast Sponsorships
If you have an email newsletter or podcast, you can accept advertising just as you would on your blog. You can reach out to potential advertisers, tell them how they would benefit from advertising with you and pitch your idea.

Sponsored Posts
Writing a sponsored post means you work with a company and write a post about their product or service. Be upfront and disclose your relationship to your readers.
Keep sponsored posts to a minimum so you don’t turn off readers. If you read blogs, you’ve probably seen sponsored posts. They can be spotted by the disclosure stating something like, “This post was sponsored by [company] but all opinions are mine.”
Find examples of sponsored post details and rates on Life Your Way.
Underwritten Posts or Series
Underwritten posts differ from sponsored posts in that the post topic is about whatever you want it to be (as opposed to the company’s product/service), but an advertiser pays to get a “Brought to you by…” type note in the post.
Anticipate the posts you think will get a lot of response, and pitch companies with an underwritten spot.
An example of an underwritten series is this Christmas Gift Guide at MoneySavingMom.com.
Listen to what others have to say
There are bloggers who have been quite successful with advertising and who’ve shared what they’ve learned.
Check out Elite Blog Academy (enrollment opens once or twice a year but you can sign up at the bottom of the homepage to be notified). This course deals with getting more traffic and therefore increasing your advertising revenue. Read my full review of this course here.
Another resource is How to Monetize Your Food Blog. This ebook is about ad networks, advertising and how to set up an ad waterfall so you get the most out of your ad spots. (It also briefly covers some of the other monetization methods listed below.)
The Niche Site Duel deals with finding the niches in which advertisers pay high rates.
Advertising takeaways
Advertising pros
Many are easy to set up and maintain.
They can be used as a way to get readers used to ads on your site before you gain higher-earning advertisers. In other words, it can eliminate “ad shock” down the road.
Advertising is indeed lucrative for select bloggers.
Advertising cons
Mobile access, popup ad blockers and streamlined browser readers often remove ads from websites, rendering them far less effective.
Good advertising revenue depends on very high traffic or a niche with high-paying keywords (hard to find these days).
Advertising rates have declined over the last few years.
Ads often make a site look spammy and cluttered.
Ads often make a user click away from your blog. For a few cents, is it worth it? You have to decide.
Many readers have developed ad blindness.
Many bloggers have been banned by Google’s Adsense program for no apparent reason. It’s unpredictable.
While it is possible to block certain URLs from showing up in your Adsense ads, sometimes bad ones sneak through. This can be detrimental to your brand and platform.
My advertising advice
Be patient. Wait for the right partnership that won’t make you compromise.
Make sure your advertisers are in line with your values.
Don’t do text links. They are often spammy and looked down upon by Google.
Unless you are an established blogger for whom advertising is already working, this is the income stream I would pursue last. The traffic requirement and low ad rates means your time will be better spent elsewhere.
How to make money blogging: affiliate marketing As an affiliate marketer, you promote someone else’s product or service in a post or elsewhere. You link to that product or service using your unique affiliate link. When, someone clicks through that link and makes a purchase (or completes a desired action set by the company), you earn a commission.
I wrote about affiliate marketing at length in What is Affiliate Marketing? and My Top Affiliate Marketing Tips, so I won’t rehash the details here.
How to make money blogging: digital products
Audio/Video
You can sell music or video that others can use as intros or outros. Try Audio Jungle.
Apps, Plugins or Themes
If you have a knack for code-writing and can write your own themes or plugins, you can sell them at a place like Creative Market. Also, many plugin authors offer their plugins for free but ask for donations.
Domains
Do you have a domain collecting problem? Did you know you could sell them for profit? Try a site like Sedo.
Ecourses/Webinars/Online Workshops
You could do all sorts of things with this type of digital product. You wouldn’t have to go big the first time around. Test the waters by holding a small, local event first. Grow bigger as you learn the ropes and figure out what works and what doesn’t.
Simply pick something you’re good at that other people want to know and teach it! Do it once or twice to refine your presentation and then start charging a small fee to those who want to take your class. Check out how LeadPages uses webinars to sell their product in this free 10-part video series.
Ebooks
Many, many bloggers have written ebooks. I’ve made a healthy chunk selling my own ebook Tell Your Time the last few years. (Here’s why I turned down a traditional book deal in favor of self-publishing.)
I don’t think ebooks sold on blogs (generally) make the same kind of money they did a few years ago, but for some, with very compelling topics and a decent group of supporters who help promote, it can be a good option.
On the other hand, there are many authors making a lot of money selling ebooks on Amazon. The key, they say, is to write multiple books, not just one.
If you want to write your own ebook, check out my series How to Write an Ebook.
One benefit of having an ebook is the ability to participate in ebook bundles which can generate quite a bit of income. Again, it’s about relationships and pooling your resources. See how Stephanie and Erin do it at Ultimate Bundles.

Premium Content & Membership Communities
Insider spaces, one-on-one interaction, VIP rooms. Premium content is just what it sounds like—content that others must pay to access.
This isn’t a new concept, but I do think it will become more and more common. There is free information all over the internet, so in order for this to work, you would have to offer something truly unique—some sort of “insider information,” special access to individuals whose expertise is highly sought after, products or services that go above and beyond the norm, such or special treatment such as one-on-one interaction and coaching.
I’ve experimented with premium content when I created my Useletter Archives (now closed). I now sell my Knowtbook, the answer to the question, “Hey Amy, can I pick your brain?”
Another example of a premium content site is Food Blogger Pro. Bjork started this site after being asked by food bloggers how he and his wife Lindsay built their hugely popular food blog, Pinch of Yum.
Photos
Are you a photographer? Illustrator? Why not sell your photos on a site like Foap or Creative Market?
Selling Blogs & Websites
Many bloggers have sold their blogs or websites for 4-, 5-, 6- and even 7-figure sums.
There is also something called flipping websites where you obtain a small blog or website, grow it and then sell it for profit later. If you want to flip a site, check out Flippa.
And if you want to read about those who have sold their blog, you can read this.
Make money blogging by selling physical products
Books
For many bloggers, their blogs have helped them sell books, both self and traditionally published. I’ve heard over and over again that traditional publishers will not typically consider your manuscript if you don’t have a blog first.
And if you’re a self-published author or a hybrid author (that is, you have both self-published and traditionally-published books), a blog is a great way to sell books.
Conferences, Classes or Special Events
I consider hosting an event like a conference a “physical” product since it involves an exchange of something tangible (in this case, money for a ticket to an experience) and happens in real life (as opposed to an online class). You can also do bigger events like day-long seminars or workshops or even multi-day conferences.
Do not underestimate the work that would go into pulling off one of these events successfully. It’s a huge undertaking, but if you have a background in event planning or are extremely motivated, organized and are good at networking and making connections with companies (sponsors) etc., this might be for you.
In your niche or area of interest, it’s likely there are large, established conferences already. So, try narrowing down your conference topic in order to target a more specific group.
If you’re going to put on a large-scale event, be very clear and very specific in your goals and make sure there’s a strong desire for the information you can provide. And then do it with excellence. The way you would make money, of course, is to charge a fee to attend and/or partner with sponsors to cover your costs (and your salary).
Handmade Products
Are you crafty? Consider selling on Etsy or Handmade at Amazon.
You can set up your own shop for free and it’s simple to get started. It’s not so simple to stand out from the crowd, so that will likely be your biggest challenge.
Here are some tips on how to market your Etsy shop (but would largely apply to Handmade as well).
Manufactured Products
You can sell manufactured products and use your site/blog/newsletter to promote it.
If you create the product yourself, that’s great, but if you don’t know how to create your own product, you can sell someone else’s in your own shop.
If you have an idea for a product you’d like to sell but aren’t sure where to start, this couple tells you how they started selling wedding linens online. Their Online Store Tutorials are particularly helpful.
How to make money advertising: services
Think of this like freelancing. If you have a skill (who doesn’t?), why not offer your service(s) via the internet (a.k.a. virtually)? It does not have to be computer related. Think of ways you can use your already-gained skills in your favor and put them online.
Administrative Assistant
App Developer
Audio/Video Editor
Coach
Concierge/Personal Assistant
Consultant
Cook – This isn’t completely virtual as you would have to deliver food, but you could still use the internet to get exposure. Here’s an example.
Counselor
Designer – Check out Minted’s Design Challenge for a place to start.
Digital Freelancer – Pick a task you can do quickly that others “will get around to someday.” For example, digitizing their boxes of photos.
Photo Editor
Project Manager
Social Media Manager
Software Writer
Speaker
Trainer
Transcriptionist
Tutor
Visioneer – Have people send you pictures of their room/house/yard and offer suggestions for improvement. Post before & after photos on your blog.
Web Builder – If you’ve set up your own site, contact local brick & mortar businesses and see if you can set up theirs. Barter services to get your feet wet, gain experience and build a portfolio.
Web Developer
Writer – The advantage of writing for other sites is that you get to be a part of something that’s already established. Also, you don’t have to worry about the technical aspects of running and maintaining your own site. Keep your ears peeled for contributor opportunities. You could start by guest posting.
I wrote a post called How to Become a Virtual Assistant with tips for anyone wanting to offer their services online.
Further reading: The Bootstrap VA: The Go-Getter’s Guide to Becoming a Virtual Assistant, Getting and Keeping Clients, and More, an ebook by Lisa Morosky. Make it your first business investment. This ebook blew my mind; it’s loaded with tips, resources and step-by-step instruction.
Selling a service is great because the startup costs are low and little to no inventory is required.
The problem is, services are not scaleable. In other words, your business size depends on how much time you have. You only have so much time in your day so you can provide a finite amount of service.
Tips for service providers:
Create a simple brochure-type site with just a few pages: Home, About, Contact, Resume, Services & Pricing, Before and After Photos (if applicable) and Testimonials once you get some.
Participate in forums, comments and other social media platforms and answer questions. Build a reputation as an authority and expert.
Where do you start when you want to make money blogging
Feeling overwhelmed yet? You’re not alone. It is overwhelming.
You should know there are no magic bullets. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for another and vice versa. There are no guaranteed, across-the-board results either. Your mileage may vary. Take the time to think through what might work for you.
What’s your personality?
Are you an introvert? Extrovert? Are you organized and like to work ahead? Are you spontaneous and fly by the seat of your pants? All these questions will help you determine the best fit for you.
For example, I started a forum many years ago, but as an introvert, I quickly realized managing and moderating all the conversation was too stressful. So, I handed it over to someone who loved the social aspect of it.
Also, I like to tackle a project and move on. I don’t like open-ended projects that are ongoing. That’s why I prefer writing and selling an ebook rather than running a membership site.
Take your personality and temperament into account and decide what will work for you.
What’s your season of life?
When I started blogging I was a mom with newborns and toddlers. There was just no way I had the time or energy to devote to an online business. But now my kids are older and it works differently.
It’s true my children are now out of the newborn and toddler stage but we have moved into the spend-your-life-in-the-car stage, chauffeuring people to activities all the live long day. Not to mention the hungry-every-5-minutes stage where they eat as fast as I cook. If it weren’t for my husband’s flexible schedule, I’d have to seriously rethink things.
Think realistically about what’s going on in your life. How much time do you really have to devote to blogging?
What are others in your niche doing?
If you’re still stumped, one of the best ways to figure out what might work for you is to look at well-established bloggers in your niche and take note of the monetization methods they use. If those methods will work with your personality and season of life, start there.

Ryan Levesque - I sell on Amazon as well as having built several other successful ecommerce "online physical products" businesses. When we applied your ASK method to our amazon / ecommerce business, the insights and benefits were SO powerful .... that we used that information to launch an entirely NEW business, built around the exact needs, products, and desires that the MARKETPLACE told us they wanted.
When I saw how powerful ASK method was, I told all my colleagues about it, and to date over 100+ of them (most of them VERY successfu ecommerce sellers already), have been using ASK to unl...See More

high-five Ben! it really means a lot coming from such an experienced player and an authority on e-commerce and marketing, really. 800 leads/day for $1.14 is POWER! (note to self: Must visit your blog more often, love your videos! Lots of pure gold in them)

Ben - This is so awesome. Those results are excellent. Gosh, going from $5/lead to $1.14/lead... and generating 800 leads/day using the ASK Method is of course, incredible!!!
But my FAVORITE part about your results is that you're doing it for a PHYSICAL PRODUCTS / E-Commerce Business.
One of the biggest questions I get from prospective students is "does the ASK Method work for e-commerce businesses?"
And the answer as you know is "Heck YES!" :-)
Thanks so much for sharing your results here in this setting, Ben. Seeing these numbers and what's possible is inspring for so many entrepreneurs reading this right now.

Ryan Levesque Thanks! I could never have gotten these results, this FAST, without using the ASK method. Period.
Three weeks it took us to get to 800+ leads a day. Crazy right?
And that's for physical products, in a very compettive space.
Can you think of any other marketing funnel, model, or tactic, that can produce those kinds of results that fast like the ASK method can produce?? (I sure can't. And trust me I've tried them ALL LOL)
Thanks again Ryan!!! ...See More

So good Ryan!! Insanely excited for this workshop and for the people who are just discovering the Ask Method!
It's funny looking back a year ago when I first joined the masterclass... I didn't imagine I'd be sat here now with 3 hugely successful product launches, $80k in sales from one of my new products and celebrating a 20% growth month on month this year! Cheers to the next 12 months and the amazing project I'm currently working using the Ask Method!
Forever an Ask Method fan! #No1Student ;) #kickASK

After just completing a third major campaign that brought in a thousand+ new students. This system just simply works! PLUS it actually makes creating the marketing and education for people so much easier.
Great job Ryan for doing the 'heavy lifting' for people and spending so many years in the trenches to come up with such an elegant system.

I didn't know that you were using this exact system, Todd, but I do know that being spoken to so clearly and specifically -- as if you were truly in my head about lots of things -- is a big part of why I did buy into the 90 Day Year program on this launch! I've always been taught that I need to speak my clients' language, but not really known how to best do that from the informational interviews I was taught to do. Step by step, through your program and these insights, I believe I'll be getting much better at communicating and marketing to the right people.

Sharon Rosen that's the power of ASK in action! "As if you were truly in my head" - that's what it's all about. Being able to understand your best customers and clients better than they do themselves.. And making their lives so much better. I truly believe the ASK philisophy makes the world a much better place by helping us understand one another.. and focus on fixing real problems people are worried the most about. Can you see how that works Sharon?.. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings here.

Ryan,
I have struggled with getting the right message to the right people for years. How do you do this oniline when you cannot sit down with someone face to face?
It wasn't until we learned about the ASK method and started 'asking' our prospects what really mattered that we were able to begin to really service our customers.
The best part is that we now know, very precisely, exactly what they need and how we can serve them best.
I can't wait to see what the entire program has evolved to now. You have so much experience with so many successful businesses online that this ASK method now has to be extremely powerful. ...See More

Such a great video Ryan, so good I burnt dinner !! (feel free to use that as a sound bite :) )
Biggest takeaway is that it works for every market, it truly is the future. When you look at products in supermarkets we already segment on a physical product basis. Just take microwave rice. I could get basmati, chinese, mexican, brown ........... It's a no brainer to implement this online as far as I'm concerned. Can't wait for the next video!!

One of the most effective things I did to grow my business to multiple 6-figures in revenue was to implement the ASK Method I learned from my mentor Ryan Levesque a couple of years ago... in fact, the ASK Method has completely transformed my business since I started using it.
In just the past 12 months alone we've generated multiple 6-figures in revenue... that's how every course launch, summit, affiliate promo, or new product we create are a big success. As an example, our most recent launch using the ASK Method did close to $200k in sales from a fairly small launch list of 2,000 people. I'm...See More

The Ask Method was the missing link my online business needed to go from making money only during big launches to making money every single day.
Not only did I learn exactly what my customers needed through my deep dive survey, but I also identified a bucket of people with a unserved pain point that led us to creating a membership site based upon solving their problem.
My very first ask method quiz generated for us 10,000 leads in only 14 days which those leads helped us launch our membership site with 1,000+ members paying $20 a month.
Whats even cooler is our quiz funnel continues to generate leads and sales EVERY DAY that funnel right into our membership site guaranteeing new members every month.
Ryan Levesque, My family and my now 2 full-time and 3 part - time employees are so grateful for the Ask Method because without it we would still be hoping our next launch paid the bills.

Working on the digital agency side with thousands of clients since 2001, I know frist-hand how hard or even impossible it is to come up with a marketing campaign that generates sales for clients without wasting a ton of cash with mediocre results. Most often businesses don't even know why their customers are buying from them in the first place! Nevermind knowing what their *potential customers* want. No way. It's "hope marketing" at it's best! Despite trying your best with Adwords, Facebook and other channels. And agencies take all the heat when the results are not there..

Nikolai - And I'm so grateful to have you part of the team. (And the ASK Method students who get to work with you are pretty lucky too! :-) ) And it's been awesome to see you - someone with a ton of traffic and funnel expertise - take things to the next level by layering ASK on top of what you're already doing.

I'm most excited about learning more about "perceived customization". This will be a real game changer for my consulting and done for you services. We have struggled with referrals who expect (and deserve) a customized service. But we can't scale if we are constantly customizing our service delivery. I love the concept of flipping the concept of customization so that we highlight the specific features that the buckets in our niche need to know. Excited to see more of this workshop!

Jennifer - Yes, I think you'll really benefit from this new piece to the ASK 2.0 curriculum we've added for your business and situation in particular. For you, it'll give you the ability to "productize" your services - so you're delivering the same core offering to your clients, but positiong that core offereing differently based on a client's situation. Excited for you to incorporate this into your business as it's evolved into this new exciting phase!

Back in 2014 I was in the gluten-free market.
I had been running a campaign for quite some time but it was losing money.
Then I ran into Ryan and what was at the time the Survey Funnel Formula (now called the Ask Method Masterclass).
I completed a full funnel overhaul following his teachings and within about 60 days after finishing I was running a profitable campaign. In fact, I was able to go about 2:1 on paid advertising! Which meant I could build a list at-will with no out-of-pocket expenses.
I have no doubt I'd still be struggling to figure things out had it not been for Ryan and his methods.

Brandon - Your story has been inspiring to so many people in the situation you were in where you were working a full-time job, and working hard on the side for your family to get your online busines launched. Going 2:1 on paid advertising is a HUGE accomplishment.

There are maybe a few people who have impacted my life in a big way, and one of them is Ryan Levesque
I was totally unaware that asteroid is about to hit me when I first opened the ASK book in late July 2015.
"ASK people what they want it give it to them...."
So simple, yet still the biggest lesson that has helped shape my life and business from that moment on.
I was a marketing consultant struggling to find client work, willing to work on any project and undercharge my service. I was doing ok financially, but was totally overworked and burned out most of the time. ...See More

After this, it's pretty neat to walk around the mall, the grocery store, the toy store and start to notice buckets everywhere! It's like now I have 3D glasses on or something :-)

Hah! Abbey - We're going to have to start giving out "bucket" shaped helmets, that once you put on - give you X-Ray vision to see buckets, buckets, everywhere... :-)

AWESOME video, Ryan! Having used the ASK Method successfully I'm a big fan and have been singing your praises to all my small business clients. I know they will get a lot from these videos. Thank you! I've been in marketing for 25 years, and can honestly say the ASK Method is a total game changer. I think in the future we will wonder how we ever did business without it :-)

When I was starting out designing and building marketing funnels for clients, one of the things that I struggled with was that there is so. much. work. to do in order to get something up and running that converts cold traffic into paying customers.
I spent loads of time and money on courses and programs and seminars. They were (and are) valuable, yet there wasn't anything that put the pieces together from end to end.
There wasn't a "master switch" that once flipped could make the whole funnel light up with conversions.
When I came across the ASK Method and began to use it in my work with cl...See More

And Brian, I'm so grateful that you did decide to make the big decision to lead the Coaching of our ASK Method students. As someone who has IMPLEMENTED the ASK Method successfully - for multiple clients, in multiple markets, across multiple industries - you truly know everything that's involved end-to-end. I can't imagine asking for better leader in that role. The care, attention, and quite frankly *love* that you put into what you do... the support you offer our students... and your leadership is really something special. Thank you Brian for all that you do :-)

Ryan Levesque I have been fascinated by this videos. They have certainly opened my mind. I had the opportunity to attend a mastermind with Ron Reich when he was down in Medellin two months ago which was truly mind-blow and I think he can leverage and say how IN LOVE I am with the ASK METHOD and how I have tried using it.
I think one of the reasons I identify with this so much, is also because of your story. Almost one year ago I had a stroke and it send me to the hospital and bed for more than 3 weeks. I could barely stand. I recovered and it was a new start for me.
I am joining ASK 2.0 - ...See More

I'm so sorry to hear about your stroke a year ago. I can only imagine what that must've been like for you to go through. Of course, I can relate to what can happen when you're in the hospital - and it forces you to rethink all your priorities and plans. I can't wait to have you part of ASK 2.0 - to work with you and help you crush it in Colombia!

I'm excited to learn about buckets. Over the past few years I have developed 4 different avenues to help women but I believe the buckets system is going to prove extremely beneficial.

Totally, Dawn :-) If you have 4 different avenues to help women, just imagine on your website having something that say to the effect "While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, if you take a moment to answer a few questions, I'll be able to recommend the right avenue for you..." which invites women to answer a few questions, enabling you to point them to the right avenue for them... This is what the ASK Method is all about :-) And we'll be getting into the first steps on how to do that and put people into different buckets starting with the next video! Stay tuned! :-)

Ryan Levesque. Thank you so much! It's a thrill how quickly you responded to my comment. Actually it's a thrill that you interacted at all. Most of these types of introduction videos talk TO not WITH the people. Your one to one advice for me is greatly appreciated! My wheels are already turning. Just bought my .com last week and will be building my site as I learn from you. I'm ready to ask appropriately!

So glad you made it here Dawn!! And I swear Ryan must have an identical twin because I've never seen someone take so much time to interact with people online.
Well done on the action so far - I loved seeing how you have already started to learn about potential buckets in your market and i'm excited to see you learn more.
The Ask Method has been transformational in my business as you know!

Biggest takeaway, oh my goodness - the bucket thing. I'd heard you talk about buckets before, but now I really get it. You can have one product but different "buckets" of people who want that one bucket. There's the value right there.
Now I get it much more, and it makes more sense to me - this can seriously help me in my business to help my clients, albeit if I mention buckets to them, they'll think I've gone mad and ask me where the leak is!!! Happy days, looking forward to the next vid!
